Synopsis
It is the early 1700s. In a frontier settlement in the Blue Ridge Mountains, Bessie Dunlop’s folk-medicine makes her an important figure. Her skills as a healer are rooted in the old ways of her Scots-Irish heritage, and when one of her remedies stops a deadly illness from spreading, her ‘magic’ becomes sought-after for all sorts of reasons. Before long, the powerful forces of religion, reputation, and prejudice are at play as the leaders of the community begin to ask where Bessie’s knowledge comes from. Are her walks in the woods simply to gather plants and herbs for her remedies, or is she meeting with the “heathen” Cherokee for more nefarious purposes? Is Bessie Dunlop a simple midwife, or is there a Satan-worshipping witch among them in the Blue Ridge?
